Self Defense Weapons

If you feel the need to carry a weapon for the purposes of self defense, it is important to find the right weapon for you. There are many different kinds of self defense weapons from which you can choose, and some are better suited for certain people than others. It is highly advised that anyone considering carrying a weapon also take some kind of self defense course, whether it is a basic course or a form of martial arts as these classes teach you how to throw and block attacks and use hand and foot strikes to disable an attacker so you can escape.

One commonly used type of weapon is the stun gun. This device looks similar to a cellular phone and has two prongs on one end. When the pronged end is held against an attacker and the trigger is held down for as long as 5 seconds (for maximum effect) a high voltage, low amp shock is delivered that renders the attacker helpless for several minutes, giving you ample time to escape. Tasers are similar in that they can also be used directly against the skin, but they can also be used from as far as 15 feet away.

Pepper spray or mace is another popular type of self defense weapon. You can even get cans that fit on your key ring. So, let’s say you are walking in a dark parking lot at night, you would hold your keys in your hand. This spray is directed at the face and eyes of the attacker, and blinds them while causing temporary yet intense pain and discomfort. The only precaution is never to use the spray when the wind is blowing in your direction, as you may end up spraying yourself.

There are also whistles and very loud alarms that can be pressed, which not only startle an attacker but attract a great deal of attention because of the decibel level. These alarms can also be put on a key ring and can be used in conjunction with the other self defense weapons described in this article. No matter what kind of defense mechanism you decide on, staying alert to what is going on around you can help you avoid an attacker.

There are other self defense weapons like concealed firearms, however these should only be considered if you are committed to taking a safety class, a class on proper use and maintenance of your firearm, and going through the proper legal procedures to get a concealed weapons permit. For most people, the devices described above are enough to disable an attacker and get away to a safe place. Always try to remember details of your attacker’s appearance to make it easier for law enforcement apprehension.
