What Will You Learn in Self Defense Courses?

Self Defense Courses

In this article we are going to discuss basic self defense courses as opposed to martial arts training. There are self defense classes and programs offered by community centers and some of them are extremely inexpensive or even free. They do not teach martial arts, but instead different ways to fend off an attacker and get help. There are classes that anyone can attend, then there are special classes for women only and those for kids only. This is because women and children are seen as easy prey by potential attackers, more so than the average male would be.

In a kids’ self defense class, children will learn basic safety rules. Such as, do not speak to strangers. Do not accept drinks, food or candy from strangers. Never accept a ride from a stranger. If someone tries to grab you or asks you to get into their car, run away as fast as possible while making a lot of noise to attract attention. Kids may also learn basic defense techniques to escape an attacker if they are grabbed and held, such as biting and striking vulnerable areas like the eyes, trachea, genitals and shins which may allow them to make an escape. But mostly, they will learn how to avoid dangerous situations.

In a womens’ self defense class, there may be various techniques taught such as throws. Women, regardless of their size, can learn to throw even a heavy male with the right techniques. This would give them ample time to run away and get help. Women may also be taught striking techniques to disable an attacker, which are usually accompanied by loud vocal noise to attract attention. Women may also be taught how to use basic self defense weapons like mace, pepper spray, stun guns and tasers. They will also be taught to escape a bad situation as soon as possible even if it means handing over all their money to a mugger.

Self defense courses are just that, instructional classes that teach students how to defend and prevent attacks. While offensive moves may be taught, they should only be used when all else has failed. It is a good idea for all women and children (and even men) to take at least a rudimentary self defense course at some point so they have basic knowledge on handling dangerous situations and protecting themselves.
