Methods for Personal Security

Personal Security
Everyone should know how to protect themselves from danger. This does not just apply to those living in big cities, but those in small towns as well. While many people feel women are especially at risk, children and men should also understand various personal defense methods. Personal security is a matter of keeping yourself safe from potential attackers who may try to mug you, kidnap you or invade your home, for example. There are many ways of self protection you can learn regardless of gender, age or size.
Martial arts like Aikido and Jiu Jitsu are popular for women because they teach how to block an attack and escape. Modern forms may even teach you how to disarm an attacker with a gun if absolutely necessary for your safety. There are self defense courses that teach blocks, throws, how to escape holds from an attacker, and how to debilitate an attacker with strikes in certain areas of the body. Some classes may even give tips on what to do if you are locked in the trunk of a car and need to escape. Of course the first thing you will be told is if being mugged, hand over the money and get away as fast as you can.
In addition to classes, there are products that can be carried on one’s person to protect them from attacks. Mace and pepper spray are very popular, especially with women. There are cans that go right on your keychain for easy access. The only danger is not getting flustered and spraying in the wrong direction or when the wind is blowing towards you. There are sirens that make extremely deafening noise with the push of a button that can also be put on a keychain. You can carry one or both of these items and keep your keys in your hand when walking in public.
To protect yourself at home, make sure all your windows and doors are locked when you are home, and before you leave home. Consider installing an alarm system, and if there is not a neighborhood watch program in your area create one yourself. Perhaps one of the most valuable pieces of advice is to stay very alert to your surroundings. Attackers often surprise their victims, but if you are very observant of who and what is around you this may help you avoid becoming a victim in the first place.
