An Overview of Martial Arts

Martial Arts

One misconception many people have is that martial arts are Asian in origin. While most types are, some come from other parts of the world. One example is Krav Maga, a martial art taught to the Israeli army that is gaining popularity around the world. The term can be used to describe most any type of fighting discipline that uses hands and feet. And, the vast majority of martial arts focus on defense rather than offense. Also, the training of the mind along with the body is also an important part of many styles. People of every age, even young children, can benefit from studying these arts with a trained professional.

Often the hard part is deciding what you want to learn. If you happen to be in a small town, your choices may be limited; for example you may have one karate studio so that is what you go with. Larger cities may have a plethora of dojos, or places to study martial arts, and many styles from which you can choose. Some of those besides karate include jujitsu, kung fu, aikido, judo tae kwon do, kenpo and more. One thing that each has in common is the emphasis on self-discipline. If you are able to choose from a variety of martial arts classes, go online and watch some videos demonstrating different styles to see what you would most like to learn.

In the beginning of any martial arts study, the teacher will most likely talk to the students about the history of the art, the goals of the class, and the importance of discipline. At first, only light stretching and perhaps meditation may be practiced. Students may feel bored at first, but this is to help prepare them for actual physical practice and give them a good mental framework. From there, the teacher will begin with physical fundamentals and advise students on exercises and meditations they may be able to work on at home.

Another thing different styles of martial arts have in common is how long they take to complete. Classes are usually quite long, although they may be broken up into shorter classes such as Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. When you complete one class, you may choose to go on to the next level. Practicing any form of martial arts can be very healthy for the mind and body, and teach you effective ways of defending yourself against attackers.
