One of the main Chinese martial arts is kung fu. It is one of many that originated from this country. Like many other martial arts, kung fu is designed for not just the body, but the mind also. Many people know about this type of self defense because it is heavily featured in many movies. While there are a wide variety of different styles that exist, the main two are Shaolin, and non-Shaolin style kung fu. There are different ways to spell kung fu, and many traditionalists which included Bruce Lee used the term gung fu.

The Shaolin style of kung fu dates back to the 5th century. Many Chinese monasteries practiced this ancient art for conditioning the body, mind and spirit. Practitioners and teachers have the goal of perfecting the flow and balance of chi, which is one term used to describe the dynamic energy that is within and around every living thing. These monastery temples not only taught the physical aspect of kung fu, but also many types of healing and meditation. Many believe that Shaolin kung fu is a more balanced, in-depth form of this martial art.

Other types of kung fu which do not fall under the Shaolin category may include a blend of different styles. Their focus is less on meditation and spirit and more on offense and defense. Most classes today will be of this type. Like many Asian forms of martial arts, kung fu uses self defense as a primary mechanism to take the offensive energy of the aggressor and turn it against them. There are throws, holds, grapples and other defensive moves. When necessary, offensive moves to disable the attacker are used. These include kicks, punches and even certain weaponry.

Regardless of whether you study the Shaolin style of kung fu or another type, the emphasis is on defending yourself, not attacking others. You will probably also learn meditation techniques, honor for life and the importance of health and balance in your own life. Look for an experienced teacher and if you like, watch a class or two before deciding if it is for you. Kung fu practice can be a great way to get in shape, learn self defense and even make friends with other students. And of course, you will see your self-confidence rise as you continue your study and improve your body and mind.
